Guelph’s Brienne Stairs named CIS athlete of the week

University of Guelph field hockey player Brienne Stairs was named one of Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s athletes of the week this past Wednesday.
Stairs, a third-year bio-medical student from Kitchener, Ont., scored eight goals as the Gryphons won all three of their games last week.
She recently helped lead Team Ontario to a silver medal at the 2009 FHC National Championships this past July.

After a weekend of quality hockey in Victoria, the Canadian and Indian teams have moved on to Surrey, British Columbia to
contest the final 5 matches of the Super Series in Tamawanis Park, in front of what will surely be a noisy crowd: 15,000 tickets have been sold and the facility is ready to deliver!
Canada feels confident that they are able to pull the series in their favour, with the next and third test on Wednesday being a critical juncture…

Adam Froese and Keegan Pereira both attained their first caps for Canada in game one of the 7 Test Super Series on Friday, and both players looked comfortable on the pitch.
“At the beginning, I was so nervous, but after a while, it got better,” said Pereira, who played about 35 minutes at the left wing position. For him, the quickness of the international game was an adjustment.

Game two of the 7 Test Super Series was a thriller, as both the Indian and Canadian teams created many scoring chances in a game that went right down to the last minute. The first half would see each team tally three goals a piece, with fans only being required to wait until the fourth minute for the first as India’s Mohammed Amir Khan scored, silencing the hometown crowd.
Following India’s goal, Canada mounted a spell of sustained pressure that would lead to three successive penalty corners…

An excited crowd assembled at the University of Victoria on Friday evening hoping to see a level of field hockey skill not often witnessed on Canadian soil, and they did not leave disappointed. India showed flashes of brilliance during game one of the much anticipated 7 Test Super Series; with crisp passes and skilled stick work they dazzled the fans and won with a close 2-0 score.
Though the Indian players had flair, the match was not lopsided and Canada created many chances themselves…

The Organizing Committee of the 7-Test Super Series between Canada and India announce today that all profits derived from the Series will be directed towards junior development initiatives.
All the net profits derived from the sale of tickets for the seven matches or for the Gala Dinner will be directed towards the development of the Canadian Junior National Program and the establishment of an Academy of Hockey at the University of British Columbia, with the goal to develop young players and prepare them to play on the senior National Team…
