You worked hard to transform the facilities of Victoria, Surrey, and Vancouver into an international sport experience worthy of Canadian field hockey, and in the end you left us all with a respect for your dedicative, philanthropist, and hospitable spirit.

The same five teams will compete for the McCrae Cup for the second straight year when the University of Victoria hosts the 2009 CIS women’s field hockey championship, from Nov. 5-8.
The Guelph Gryphons, UBC Thunderbirds, Victoria Vikes, Toronto Varsity Blues and Alberta Pandas all return from last year’s tournament, also held at Victoria, when the hometown Vikes defeated Alberta 2-1 in the national final to tie UBC’s all-time record of 11 McCrae Cup triumphs, one more than Toronto…

In the fourth and final game of the series against USA on Sunday morning, Team Canada finally came out with the start they wanted, and they built a 2-0 lead by the 26th minute. The final score was 3-1 Canada after a second half that was a test for the team’s defensive resolve, as they played shorthanded for much of it.

After losing game 2 to USA on a last minute penalty corner, a match that they felt they should have won, the Canadian men came out with a renewed sense of urgency on Saturday. On a cold and rainy Thursday night at UBC’s Wright Field, Canada outplayed USA for the most part, but a few defensive breakdowns were difference makers in a 3-2 loss. 7 Test Super Series has Canada Headed in Right Direction

Although they came out of the 7 Test Super Series with a record of 0-6-1, the Canadian Men’s Field Hockey Team improved in a number of areas as the matches progressed. One major reason for the losing record was the absence of several key players due to club team obligations and injuries – captain Ken Pereira, Rob Short, Mark Pearson, and Scott Tupper were all away for more than half of the series. The one match that featured a full roster was game 3, the first in Surrey, and it was the one match that Canada didn’t lose outright, pulling out a 4-4 tie in the final minute…

Upon completion of the seven game series with India, Canada’s Head Coach Alan Brahmst was unhappy with his team’s finishing ability. The team did not capitalize on enough of their field goal opportunities, and their penalty corner conversion was a disappointing 17%. After only a brief rest since the conclusion of the 7 Test Super Series between Canada and India, the Canadian Men’s national team will assemble tonight at the University of British Columbia for the first of four test matches against the United States beginning at 6:30PM PST.
