I’m impressed. He’s 17 years old – still in high school – and a member of Canada’s senior men’s national field hockey team. He’s playing hooky to play hockey in Delhi, India at the Hero Honda FIH World Cup. With permission, of course.
Taylor Curran is bright. And lessons learned at the FIH World Cup will far exceed lessons learned in the classroom…

The second match of the day seemed beforehand like a David vs. Goliath contest. Canada had lost veteran Ranjeev DEOL with a nasty hand injury in practice and were lining up three World Cup rookies (Matthew PECK in goal, Taylor CURRAN and Jesse WATSON). To their credit, they seemed in a better frame of mind than against Germany and the first scoring chance was for them when Philip WRIGHT received the ball completely alone in the Dutch circle, but could not control it…

Game 10 – Canada v. Germany: 0-6 (half-time: 0-4)
The first game of day 4 pitted the youngest team of the competition (Germany, 24 years old) lead by the youngest Captain (Maximilian MÜLLER, 22) to the oldest team (Canada, 27) lead by veteran Ken PEREIRA (36). The two teams have not met often, and only once in a World Cup back in 1998 when the match ended in a 4-4 tie with Rob Short, still playing in the Canadian team today, scoring two goals…

On the third day of the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 in Delhi, Australia dominated India (5-2) in front of the boisterous local crowd, England won a high scoring game (6-4) against South Africa and Pakistan narrowly edged Spain (2-1).

Game 8 – Pakistan v. Spain: 2-1 (half-time: 1-0)
Game 9 – India v. Australia: 2-5 (half-time: 1-3)

Mark Pearson and I have hooked up. His feet are firmly planted on the ground in Delhi India and mine in Burlington Ontario.
Mark considers himself among “the lucky players” who is suiting up at the 2010 Hero Honda FIH World Cup. “The send-off (in Vancouver) was a lovely evening with friends and family at a nice downtown hotel. It was especially nice with all the Olympic festivities going on.”
And the UBC alum was most appreciative of Coach Alan’s (Brahmst) “formal team announcement and small token gift” given to the members of the World Cup team…

New Zealand and The Netherlands won their first games at the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 in Delhi, against Canada (3-2) and Argentina (3-0) while defending Champion Germany had to share points with Korea (2-2).

At the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 in Delhi, India pleased the crowd with an impressive win over arch-rivals Pakistan (4-1), England surprised Australia (3-2) and Spain struggled to take the best over South Africa (4-2).
