Chile beats Canada in U17 Bronze medal match

Chile defeated the Canadian men’s national under-17 team 5-1 Saturday afternoon in the bronze medal match of the Pan American Youth Championship. Later in the day Argentina defeated the United States to earn their National Olympic Committee the right to send a field hockey team to the Youth Olympics this August.
The Canadians started the match very well but were unable to contain the Chilean attack. Gordan Johnston goal off a penalty corner got Canada on the board in the 29th minute to make the score 2-1…

A Disappointing Result
7:00 am we woke up for an early team swim. After 10 minutes in the pool we got out for the warmth of the showers and then headed to breakfast.
One hour later at 8:30 am we left the hotel to head to the field for our 10:00 o’clock game starts.
We started the game off sloppy allowing Argentina to score 2 quick goals but we dominated the next 25 minutes and scored 1 goal. Just before the end of the first half we got unlucky and lost the ball resulting in another goal…

The Canadian men’s national under-17 team were defeated by Team USA 2-1 Friday afternoon. The game was Canada’s last round robin match of the Pan American Youth Championship. They will now face Chile in the bronze medal game Saturday morning.
Canada was unable to gain control of the match early on with the USA
controlling most of the play. Canada turned the ball over at the 26th
minute mark of the game and a USA forward was able to walk into the
Canadian circle to score…

On his way to the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, FIH President Leandro Negre stopped in Toronto last week to meet with representatives of Field Hockey Canada (FHC).
In the morning, Mr. Negre participated in a work session with FHC President Mary Cicinelli, Board Director Hari Kant, Senior Staff Member Karen O’Neill, as well as Canadian members of FIH and PAHF boards and committees from the Toronto area…

Rise and Shine, an Unexpected Wake Up Call
Our second day of rest began with Big Alv barging into our rooms hours before our wake up time – yelling and screaming that everyone has to get up for a run – the last one out was going to be thrown into the cold hotel pool (I believe that an ice bath are warmer than that pool), In less than 5 minutes we were all out of bed doing a short run and stretching with Steacy.
Breakfast could not come fast enough…

A Good Initiative from CANADA – Helping Local Mexican Youth Field Hockey
Our first of two days off between games started off bright an early with a 9 am breakfast of eggs and pancakes.
Awake, nourished and ready to go – we headed to the field for our practice. With the game against Argentina coming up fast the coaches decided to work on some set plays to prepare us for our next match.
After the practice was something special and rare for all of us…

Our Second Match of the Tournament – Chile versus Canada
The day started off with a good breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which was followed with a good stretch – a Steacy’s yoga class.
The team had an early light lunch consisting of sandwiches, fruit and lot of fluids to help prepare for the game.
The game was against Chile. The first half was an intense match up and we ended tied.
Coming out in the second half the team was pumped…

Opening Ceremonies and Our First Match Against Mexico
Today we woke up ready to play our first game of the tournament.
The day started off like usual – pancakes and eggs for breakfast at the hotel.
Everybody seemed nervous and excited to play our first match of the tournament. This made for an interesting mix of feeling while waiting to be driven to the field.
Before the game, there was an opening ceremony where all 5 teams follow a brass marching band out onto the field…

Canada had 2 days of rest before the third match against Argentina. Canada had the majority of ball possession and controlled the play in the first half. Canada turned the ball over in midfield at the 30 second mark of the game and an Argentine forward was able to walk in all alone driving the ball into the Canadian net.
Every Canadian error lead to an Argentine scoring opportunity…
